The thing that I want to comment on today is the schedule that is here at the middle school. There are a bunch of things that I really like about the schedule that I wonder how I could implement back home in Utah. I really like the idea of being able to be flexible with when a subject is taught. Everything is based on a weekly schedule. Essentially it breaks down to sometime during the week we will have 2 English lesson, 3 Norwegian lessons, 3 math lessons, a religion lesson, 2 social studies lessons, 2 gym lessons and 2 science lessons.I am not sure how that would work if each teacher was only in charge of one subject and so only had those lessons. I guess I like the idea of not having to have each subject each day. Some subjects take more time than others and so that is how time can be allotted differently. I like the idea of being able to have some lesson objectives for the week and then have various times to achieve those objectives.
There are two main teachers for each class. Between them they spend the majority of the time with the students. It allows for flexibility so that days like today where the students are taking a 5 hour-long test that they can also take yesterday to prepare for that long test. It also makes it possible to get some extra practice to prepare for some test that is coming up (like a 5 hour English test). There also seems to be a lot of collaboration between the teachers on working those times out. I also see that partnership with the other teacher as a way to make suggestions for each other if things aren't working out.
