20b: Easter Week - Monday - Rosendal, Bergen, Prague

Monday was a great day.  I woke up with plenty of time to eat breakfast, wash my dish and have everything packed and ready to go.  It was a good thing that Kylie did a mental checklist out loud outside because she reminded me of something that I would eventually need. It would probably be a good idea that I have my passport.  (Though I haven’t really needed it yet and I am in Prague the second night.)  All five of us (Me, Ashley, Kylie, Kort and Megan) all got of the fast boat.  I tried to pay with my credit card but it got rejected.  Oh well.  I had cash that I could pay with.  So I did.  The fast boat was uneventful.  Kort and Megan got off at Flesland to go to the airport to get on their flight. Ashley, Kylie and I continued on to Bergen because our flight wouldn’t leave until 4 pm.

We had a couple hours in Bergen that we had to kill.  Ashley hasn’t been in Bergen since the day she flew in so we went to many of the places that I went two weeks ago with Megan and Julia.  It was fun.  We went Moods of Norway and Deli de Luca (twice. Once for mid-morning orange sweet bread treat and then for lunch which was a chicken and pesto calzone.) We also went into other tourist shops and interior design shops.  Once it was time to get to the airport we had a little bit of trouble finding the bus station that we needed to take that would also connect us to the airport.  We found the name of the stop but the bus number didn’t up.  We figured out that we were at stop A. Upon looking around and we found stop B down the road like 10 meters.  We all walked over and looked at the buses that went there.  Again, they weren’t the right numbers.  So then I walked to another stop (I think C) and then I was able to find a map of that specific bus stop.  I found out that we needed to find stop I which around the square.  I ended up walking way more than I needed to.  But the important thing was that before the bus came I found the stop and called Kylie and Ashley over in time to catch our bus.  We had previously purchased our 90 minute tickets so they only cost 35 Kr instead of 50 on the bus.

We rode the bus for a while and were a little bit unsure as to when to get off.  We trusted the instructions given to us and got off at the appropriate time which correlated with the right name of a bus stop.  We got off the bus and waited for the second bus that was supposed to take us to the airport.  We get on a bus. Then the driver drove like 2 stops and then told us that we needed to get off if we were going to the airport.  He told us that the airport is down the street.  We all thought that this was pretty strange.  But if the bus drivers knows where we are going then he knows better how to get there than we do.  Well, it was a good thing we have a bunch of time before our flight left and the Bergen airport isn’t that big or busy.  We probably walked about a kilometer or two to actually get to the airport.  We were walking on this normal Norwegian road (one that is narrow and is `barely wide enough for two cars) and passed a school.  Then up the hill and around a bend we saw a parking lot and thought that we were pretty close.  Not really.  That parking lot was only like halfway.  But the parking lot was good because we knew that we were on the right track.  Ashley also seemed to remember the parking lot.  (Not sure how that works because when we took the bus from the airport down to the pier we don’t pass this parking lot)  After that parking lot then we found a main road (two lane road) that also had an established bike lane (both ways) and a walking path and could then see the airport.

Upon arriving at the airport we walked in and then went into the arrivals part so that we could use the bathroom for free.  Then Ashley got us checked in.  Security was a breeze.  Time to wait for our flight to Prague in the airport.  Quickly, we claimed a table and had a seat.  While we were walking around I saw this girl that looked kind of lonely just sitting there.  I was thinking “30 seconds of crazy, insane courage” but then faltered.  Bottom line was that I didn’t go and talk to her.  So long random girl who flew from Bergen to Copenhagen on Monday.  I think I talked about it too much with Kylie and Ashley that I psyched myself out.  After just about everybody was loaded, we all tried to get on that flight. We didn’t realizing that it was going to Copenhagen and not to Prague.  The counter women corrected us and so it was time to wait for a little longer.

Our flight was delayed like 30 minutes because the airplane didn’t come in for a while.  But that was about it.  Not too much exciting stuff has happened so far.

The flight from Bergen to Prague was normal.  All three of us sat together on the same row.  That probably happened because I paid for all of our tickets at the same time and Ashley checked us all in at the same time.  We didn’t need to pay the $5 or whatever the fee was when I paid for the tickets to get that. #travelsmart

Prague reminded me a lot of Lithuania and Latvia flying in.  It looks really flat here and just really looks like Eastern Europe.  It was kind of windy when we flew in so that was probably one of the sketchiest landings but we made it.  Everything is fine.

At the airport we each took out 2000 Czech moneys (about $80).  That ended up being a very good amount.  I felt like I have been able to do all the things that I want and haven’t run out of money.  From the airport we got on a bus (119) closer to the center of the city.  On the bus we sat by this nice girl, Christina, who is a student and works at the airport.  She was very nice and spoke English well and her accent was impeccable.  She was very helpful and happened to lead us onto the metro that we needed and then told us to get off at the appropriate stop.  Thank you Christina!

Walking out of the metro we saw this sight.  We almost instantly fell in love with Prague.  I mean all the stuff leading up to that point was fine, but it was then that we were all blown away.

We then walked to Old Town Square which was easy to find because it is a prominent place that was a ‘happenin’ place.  Since it is the week before Easter there are some Easter decorations which are fun.  From there we found out hostel: Prague Square Hostel.  We found our room and dropped off our heavy backpackers and went out to see Prague.

At this time we were hungry so we asked for a suggestion from the host at the hostel and we started walking that way.  On the way we got stopped by this street musician.  We ended up seeing him a couple times.  He was playing Hallelujah.  Then after he played that song he played one of his own and then was done.  Also on the way we stopped at this restaurant that had their menu on in their window.  We decided that we were hungry and that this restaurant would be great so we stopped there.  #noregrets

At the restaurant we decided to order three entrees and then just split all three of them.  I am having a hard time remembering all of the things that we got but I know that one of the entrees was duck, another was rabbit, and then veggie and meat kebab .  I got apple juice to drink which was the same price as Kylie’s water but more expensive than the beer that Ashley got.  The food was great!  I think I liked the duck the most.  I am still not really sure which one was which.  After we ate everything we asked for dessert menu because “hey, why not?  We are in Prague.”  We all ended up getting an apple tort thing that was really good.  We ended up being in that restaurant for like 2 hours just between the talking and the food and the wait time between dinner and dessert but I am not complaining.  We were pretty tired so not moving that fast.  We made with it out paying 1165 Czech which wasn’t bad considering we got a drink, entrée and dessert.

The whole night was one giant math problem.  All of us had 1000 Czech bills and people didn’t want to break them so it was a lot of Kylie pays 1000 and Andrew pays 500 and then gets the change and then Ashley owes Andrew a little bit and owes Kylie some money as well.  Practical math!  We had the same situation at the hostel and at the restaurant.  I loved it!

We then went back to the hostel and went to our room in order to go to bed.  This night we were in an 8 person.  It was one of those nights that remind you that you aren’t paying much for the room and so can’t really expect the best sleeping conditions.  There were people that were going in and out of the room all night with flashlights.  Also the window was open because the room was warm but the window opened to the street.  If it wasn’t people in the room then it was people out on the street that were making noise.  All in all It made it really hard to sleep.  The nice thing though was that we only had that one night.  All of the other nights our roommates were quiet or had the same bedtime as us.
