20e: Easter Week - Thursday - Ostrava, Krakow

After waking up we ate our small breakfast that we had bought the previous day in the supermarket in Prague.  I enjoyed my sweet rolls with jam and tangerines.  We got checked out of the hotel and then were off and on our way.  We weren’t really sure about the buses so we just walked from the hotel back to the city center.  Then we looked around for a grocery store for food and they were nowhere to be seen.  We decided that there would be food at the train station so that was our new goal.  Get to the train station.  We looked at the signs by the bus station and found a route that would work.  But then another bus came and it had the name of the train station on it so we ended up just taking that bus instead.

We get to the train station and Ashley goes up to the cashier and asks for information.  The woman then says, “Opposite kassa” a bunch of times getting louder each time she says it.  Ashley didn’t know what she was meaning but I got it.  She was saying, “Opposite register” so I pulled Ashley aside and we went to the place we needed to.

At information though the first woman didn’t speak English that well.  But it is pretty easy to communicate that we want to go to Krakow, now.  So we got our tickets and then we were shown the bus that we needed to get on.  It was really nice because we only had like 45 minutes until the bus was supposed to leave.  That was enough time to explore the train station and buy some goodies at the grocery store.

I saw that blue Fanta again and so then I bought it.  I don’t really know why it was blue.  The flavor was like lemonade with mint.  I was glad that I tried it but I probably won’t buy it again.  I feel that way with a lot of international drinks.  I also bought a bunch of the chocolate wafer bar things.  They are so good!  Ashley and Kylie made fun of me for it.  But I didn’t care too much.

The bus ride was uneventful.  There weren’t very many people on the bus, maybe 15, but I could pretty well do what I wanted.  I had my own seat and then my backpack was on the seat next to me.  Then I switched sides of the bus and laid across the bus.  It was all fine because there was nobody around.  We hit a slow down at the border between Czech Republic and Poland but it wasn't too long.

The train station in Krakow is really cool.  Like very nice!  There was also a very new shopping mall that was attached to the train station.  With the train station behind us we walked to find the One World Hostel.  I was impressed by the hostel.  It was very nice.  The inside looked recently remodeled and it just looked nice.

After the quick stop at the hostel we continued in that direction to take a look at the Old Town Square and to find Wawel Castle today since it was going to be closed the rest of the weekend.  We found the castle and then went to the visitor center and the gift shop.  I purchased a magnet and a ticket to see the inside of the castle.  It was a nice castle and good to be able to get out of the rain that was falling outside.

Inside the castle we were not supposed to take pictures.  I am not sure why.  But there were people everywhere like there is in the Hermitage that were there to keep order and remind people to not touch or take pictures.  There were some cool walls and some cool ceilings.  I didn’t learn much because there wasn’t much signage again.  I was able to catch up to a tour group with a guide speaking in English.  So that was pretty nice for the three rooms that we were in at the same time.  There were some really nice tapestries as well.  One of them even showed signs of being damaged and the tour guide pointed that out saying that these tapestries are fragile and not to touch.

We returned to the hostel in order to get a dinner recommendation.  We ended up going to Gospoda Koko.  It was a nice little restaurant that had a lot of chicken items on the menu.  That is what I ended up getting.  3 chicken drumsticks dipped in honey (yum) along with a bowl of chicken noodle soup, mashed potatoes and a side of salads.  The salads were interesting.  They were interesting colors and flavors.  I ended up paying only 14 zloty for my meal which is about $3.74.  It was a cheap meal.

After dinner we decided to walk around the Old Town Square and visit the Easter market.  It was fun to have a look around.  I also decided that it was time for dessert, because why not?  I ended up seeing a stall that made crepes and I was sold.  I decided that I wanted to eat a crepe.  There were a bunch of different options of things that I could have on my crepe but I ended up getting cream cheese and peaches inside.  Then on top there forest fruit jam on top.  It was really good.  It was also somewhat expensive though considering it cost me 15 zloty which was more than my dinner cost.  Go figure!

We then went back to the hostel and met our roommates.  There are two guys and a girl who are Brazilian but are studying abroad in Budapest, Turkey.  They talked about how Turkish is a crazy language and even though they have been there for several months they still can’t understand very much of what is going on because they don’t understand the language.
